Disturbing news from down under...the ocean suddenly turned into cappuccino. Enjoy Labor day at the beach, everyone!
Even more disturbing news from Texas, there is a giant 200 yard spiderweb in Tawakoni State Park. You can't appreciate the true creepyness of this thing unless you watch the video in the link. It may be the result of "social spiders spinning the web together". Well, that's just great---if the squid don't organize and get us, the freakin' spiders will. And God help us if they decide to join forces. Come to think of it, what if the squid are behind the frothy ocean? Those pointy-headed "marine experts" are oblivious to what's really going on. I bet they think our economy is run by a complicated intermix of government and free market forces, and not the Illuminati.
We're all doomed. Go out and party this weekend. Enjoy yourself before the invertebrates wipe us out, or enslave us, or some other damn thing.

Still runnin'

Not that anyone's been reading my blog this long, but remember these people?
Yep, they're still running. Humans, and the things we do, continue to amaze me. Some of us can run around the planet, others can't make it down a runway in high heels.

Do models get combat pay?
Being a news anchor has fringe benefits. Like watching skinny chicks wipe out.

Vick haiku
Picked up (and brushed up) from a wit on the AJC blog.
Morality is
only a white mans construct
just keepin it real
The water bottle
In Miami did not hold
pot, maybe Valtrex?
Vick apologists:
"Come on, they are just dumb dogs!"
Felonies are fun

Another good reason to live in Decatur
It's that time of year again, the Decatur Book Festival will be running through the Labor Day weekend. They've managed to attract some very cool authors, like Charles Frazier (Cold Mountain) and Kinky Friedman (who is more famous for being Kinky Friedman than for writing, really. But he should be a hell of a keynote speaker.) Check it out! There's quite a range of activities beyond discussions/signings with the 200 invited authors, like cooking demonstrations and live music.
Book Fairs aren't all that common, but Decatur is quite the literary stronghold. There's kind of a intelligentsia feedback loop at work. Taxes are so high that you can only afford to live there if you have an advanced degree. The high taxes support a school system that parents are rabidly tied into, so the kids learn to read well. They grow up and pay high taxes and read books. It all makes sense, yes? I remember going to the downtown Decatur library when I was a kid, it was pretty big for the relative size of the city. They've expanded the building now and it hosts tons of authors, book discussion groups, and even musical artists.
All the local bibliophiles also support offbeat independent bookstores. Wordsmiths just opened in the old Post office building. It carries some of the books you'll find at the big chains, but the space is much cooler than the local Borders. My favorite ice cream shop, Jake's, shares a space with Little Shop of Stories, a bookstore aimed at kids. Normally this would drive me nuts, but Decatur children are remarkably well behaved. Yet another reason to live in Decatur.

In the category "making me feel old"
The first cellphone ad. Or to be precise, I think it's more of a car/boat phone. Notice the quaint touches, like the driver actually stops his car to make a call. Oh, the good old days.

Chat with God

Church is so 20th Century. Why bother? To speak with the Eternal Creator, all you have to do is log on to iGod. (Motto: "Repenting made easy"). Salvation is pretty easy too---I asked God what would make him happy, He said maybe a million dollars. Yeah, a lot of cash, but He takes Visa, Mastercard, personal check, Discover card, pesos, jewelry, pretty much any form of payment. So all I have to do is write a check. I'll add that to my Gubb list of things to do this week, and I can cross out "ensure eternal peace".
The afterlife seems rather boring, though, God referred me to another link when I asked Him for a joke. This is never a good sign.

Wasting your life with Flash games
The first Flash game I stumbled across was Samorost, one of the most popular games of the genre. The game was developed by Jakub Dvorsky as a thesis for school. He got a "B" on his thesis, which proves that pointy-headed academics never have the final word.
If you want to kiss a few hours of your life good-bye, you can find it and some other flash games here. And yes, clicking on the hookah does do something. Is it sad it was the first thing I clicked on in that screen?
